neighborhoods destroyed and Russians rolling through the suburbs. The second puts players with a squad of soldiers fending off the Russian assault in Washington, D.C.Īlthough playing as Task Force 141 members is great fun, “Modern Warfare 2’s” power comes from the battles in the homefront. The game’s divided into two alternating parts: The first follows an elite special forces group called Task Force 141, which is trying to find Makarov, the man responsible for World War III. It’s sobering and it also jolts gamers out of the haze they’ve fallen under. In the process, Infinity Ward, which started with World War II-based games, creates the modern-day equivalent of the Omaha Beach scene in “Saving Private Ryan.” But unlike the Nazis threat, the terrorist attack speaks to the dangers we deal with now. It made me wonder why Infinity Ward would include something so viscerally despicable.īut after playing through the campaign, I realized that the level’s impact fuels the rest of “Modern Warfare 2” as the Russians retaliate and ignite an insane Russian-American war. It’s guaranteed to make most sick to their stomach. Being incognito, gamers have to play along with the villain, Makarov, and spray bullets around the terminal, slaughtering civilians. The stage where players take on the role of an undercover CIA agent features a disturbing terrorist attack on a Russian airport. Perhaps no level is a controversial or as shocking as the startling “No Russian” chapter. It challenges players’ values and shakes their sense of morality by putting them in some reprehensible circumstances. It takes even more to make us feel uncomfortable.īut “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” manages to get through to an audience accustomed to bloody scenes of machismo.

Firing a rocket launcher has turned into a God-given right. We have no problem sniping soldiers at 100 paces. For a whole generation, death matches and gore are commonplace. Like it or not, game culture has become inured to violence.
